It’s amazing how many people actually put sleep in second place.

Getting a good nights sleep should be a top priority on everyone’s list because without sleep you are nothing so to speak.

 

Why is sleep important?

 

Sleep is important for so many reasons. It is not just simply about shutting down your body and brain to recharge as people often think.

No sleep is much more important than that.

You see you can go without food for a few days if you really want too but not without sleep. Sleep is the one thing that your body must have every day in order for your body to function at optimum levels.

Different types of sleep

 

We are all aware that there are different types of sleep. Not all sleep has been created equal.

Naps

People tend to take naps during the day if they are overtired and this type of sleep is generally good for temporally defeating fatigue if you have not been sleeping very well.

Naps are definitely not a good replacement for a full sleep. They will only restore your energy for a very short amount of time.

 

NREP (non rapid eye movement sleep)

This is sleep whereby you don’t dream. I guess you could say that you are still semi awake in some respects.

 

REM (Rapid eye movement sleep)

This is the best kind of sleep because you are fully asleep and your eyes will be moving very rapidly. This is the type of sleep where you dream.

1. Improves concentration

I’m sure that you have at some point had very little sleep at nighttime and then had to pay for it during the day.

The truth is that we have all been there.

Without being able to sleep well at night it greatly reduces our ability to concentrate during the day.

Even the smallest task can become incredibly difficult.

 

2. Keeps you young

Getting a good nights sleep helps in keeping you healthy and youthful.

A study was carried out whereby participants were restricted to 4 hours of sleep per night for 6 nights. The results were compared to participants who were allowed to stay in bed for 12 hours a night for 6 nights.

The results showed that glucose tolerance was lower in the sleep deprived participants and that lack of sleep actually increased the chances of age-related chronic disorders including aging.

3. Enables better recovery from illness

I’m sure you’ve experienced illness at some point in your life even if it was just a cold.

Well if you think about it, what’s the first thing that you want to do once you get sick?

You want to sleep and there is a very good reason for this.

When you sleep your body actually works really hard to repair and restore any damage it has experienced.

When you sleep well it gives your immune system a boost.

The worst thing you can do is to ignore your body when you are feeling under the weather.

The hormone leptin signals to your brain that it is full up.  Without proper sleep, this hormone is reduced.

Ghrelin is a hormone that causes you to feel hungry. When you are sleep deprived this hormone increases.

Did you know that getting the right number of hours sleep means that you will be less prone to falling sick?

Yep, that’s right because when you sleep well your immune system is constantly getting enough time to repair itself and to fight off infection and sickness.

If you feel like going to bed early some days its probably going to be a wise decision as your body probably needs it.

Whilst stress can cause you to find it hard to sleep the same is also true that if you don’t sleep it can increase your chances of stress.

When you sleep you cut off from all the worry during the day. If however, you can’t get to sleep then the chances are that you will wake up feeling even more stressed.

Not only will your concentration levels be out of the window but you will probably have tossed and turned all night making yourself feel even more stressed and tired than the day before.

+ Make the atmosphere as calm and as quiet as possible in the lead up to bedtime

+ Make a to-do list the night before so that you can brain dump and free up your mind for better sleep

+ Prepare yourself as much as possible for the next day so you don’t have to stress

+ Keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature
